Chapter Nineteen

When we got home, I grabbed a snack and went straight to my room. I wanted a hug from Grizz and to sleep for twenty-four hours straight. I wasn’t sure I’d get both, but either would have sufficed.

Instead, I got the cold shoulder from my fuzzy buddy and a visit from Merc in my dreams.

Not long after I drifted off, Merc appeared beside my bed, looming above me. I scooted backward to make room for him, and he sat on the edge, looking down at me intently. A mix of apprehension and concern swirled in his dark eyes, making my heart race. Even though it was a dream, our dreams were never just that. They were a meeting place of sorts.

A place where secrets could be divulged.

“What you did—going after Reinhardt—you should have told me.”

How did he know?

“I didn’t cut you out to hurt you. I did it because I didn’t want an argument.”

“You would not have gotten one,” he replied, the intensity of his stare almost pinning me to the bed.

“You think I was right to go?”

“I think you need a mentor, and he was your best bet. You had something to leverage him with—something of great value to him. I think it was a well thought-out plan—except for the part where you left me out.”

“I didn’t want to spook him,” I said in my defense. “I don’t know your history or what might have happened between you two in my absence. The last thing I wanted was to drive him away because of my entourage.”

His lips pressed to a thin line as he considered my argument.

“A fair point but a moot one, it seems, given that the warlock you sought isn’t the one you found.”

“What do you know of Drake?” I asked, hoping to get a bit of insight into the warlock I’d just attached myself to.

“He is Reinhardt’s second—was Reinhardt’s second.”

There was a sadness in his eyes as he said it that made me wonder if he’d been close to the warlock lord. If once again there was something he wasn’t telling me.

“You believe he won’t try to trick me? Harm me?”

“I believe he won’t. Especially not after you set him on fire because he angered you.” A small smile curled the corner of his mouth. “Kat filled me in on everything. I think I would have enjoyed seeing you put Drake in his place.”

“It smelled bad. You might be glad you missed it.”

The bed shook as he fought to retain his laughter.

“Perhaps another time.” The amusement in his eyes faded, giving way to lust burning in their depths. “Piper—”

“Wait!” I said, throwing out my arm. “I need to tell you something before you do whatever it is you’re thinking of doing.”

“It must be terribly important,” he said, the pull of a smile tugging at his lips again.

“I didn’t want to say anything about this—we all agreed not to—but I think you should know. For some reason, I think you may already suspect it.”

“What is this secret?”

I took a deep breath, preparing to play a card I couldn’t take back, dream or not.
